Gambling Gets a Senate Seat

Gambling Gets a Senate Seat

When Americans think of the sunshine state of Florida, they think of fabulous golden beaches, ritzy hotels, Latin culture, the world-famous Disneyworld Resort and Kennedy Space Center.

Florida is the world’s premier tourist year-round vacation destination and it’s now got a Senator who is looking to further the cause of the Seminole Indians.

Just exactly what Senator George LeMieux is working on is big stuff – especially in light of the current climate surrounding the UIGEA.

LeMieux wants to legalize online gambling in Florida and he plans to expand the legal status of it by engaging the Seminole tribe.

An ambitious undertaking

Governor Charlie Crist surprised everyone when he picked LeMieux as Senator over many other notable political heavyweights.

Not everyone is pleased with the appointment but the Senator has proven himself worthy of his selection by dint of his political savvy and ability.

The current economic climate in the US has resulted in depleted state and federal coffers and online gambling revenue can prove an invaluable revenue source.

The compact with the Seminoles has been underway since 2007 and LeMieux is looking to continue where he left off, in spite of the Supreme Court nullifying the proposition.

Support is gaining momentum

There are at least two active pro-gambling members who are ready to support greater leniency in online gambling. LeMieux will be joined by Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey and Barney Frank.

The goal is to legalize online poker and online gambling – thus breaking with the strict measures entrenched in the UIGEA.

With momentum steadily building in the pro-online gaming movement, the tax revenues generated will help an ailing economy to turn the corner.
