How Different Ball Amounts affect Bingo
When people play live Bingo at some of the classier venues, their fate often rests on the mercy of the hopper. That’s because it is the hopper that holds the balls and jumbles them before they are either picked out of the machine or shot up into a cylinder. Interestingly though, the amount of balls that are put in the hopper varies depending on where a person is playing their Bingo. And as you’ll find out, this can also affect the game that you’re playing.
Differences in location
While the concept of Bingo didn’t originate in the United States, many people give American businessman Edwin Lowe credit for inventing the modern day version of the game that is played around the world today – only it’s not exactly played the same around the world. That’s because Americans use a version of the game that only utilizes 75 balls in the hopper. This differs greatly from the way that the majority of Europeans and Australians play the game since their hopper contains 90 balls. This difference weighs heavily into how the two games play out.
The 75 ball game
Just as there are 75 balls utilized in the American game, there are also 75 different numbers that will be called throughout the game. The way that these numbers are called goes in a pattern of 5 columns of 15 balls with each one being called in a downward column format. Along with this, the card in the 75 ball game has five squares going across and five squares going downwards making a total of 25 spaces. Each column is represented by a letter in this format: B-I-N-G-O. The numbers that make up 24 of the squares (1 square is a free one) will feature different numbers ranging from 1 all the way up to 75. The winner of the 75 ball game is the first person who can form one of the specified patterns (normally a straight line).
The 90 ball game
Going with the game that is vastly different from the 75 ball version, the 90 ball game features a ticket (card) that only has three rows yet contains nine columns. This means that these cards have an additional two numbers on them in comparison to the American version, and players must form a specified pattern that normally involves one, two, and three horizontal lines for a win. When a person gets the first horizontal line, they are the first winner while the 90 ball game continues until two line and three line winners are also established. The three line winner will get the biggest prize of the group. Another thing to take note of is that the ticket used for 90 ball Bingo doesn’t contain letters on the bottom or top of it as the 75 ball card often does.
Commonalities between the two games
Even though the 75 ball and 90 ball games seem to be quite a bit different from each other, they do share some common ground. For one thing, players in both games listen for the numbers to be called out based on what the hopper delivers and then try to form specified patterns depending on what they have. Another element that both games share is that the players in the games need to mark off the numbers on their card in some manner or another to ensure that they know which numbers have been called.
The future of the game
Despite having some similarities, the 75 ball and 95 ball games are like night and day to each other as far as the Bingo world goes. And these differences tend to bring more people to one version or the other. It is often speculated by people within the Bingo industry that the 90 ball game will one day be the most heavily played version. The reason for this prediction is that the 3 winner format sees people who get all three horizontal lines receive a jackpot for doing so. And with bigger money on the table for the third winner, it’s very likely that people will flock to where the bigger prizes are.
