The Exciting History of Blackjack

Blackjack has a very interesting history and is played at nearly all casinos around the globe.  Each year, thousands of blackjack tournaments are held has players battle to show who has the greatest blackjack skills.  The Blackjack gaming community is comparable to the poker community, as both are wildly popular games.  There are many different versions of blackjack including European blackjack, American blackjack and others.  It is believe that blackjack was invented in 17th century France but its popularity skyrocketed when it was brought to America in the 18th century. 

The first version of blackjack was known as 21 and it is unclear where this game originated.  The reference to this game was mentioned by Miguel de Cervantes, a Spanish author who wrote the famous novel titled Don Quixote.  Cervantes was an avid gambler and the primary characters in his work titled Rinconete y Cortadillo were skilled at cheating the game of Ventiuna – the Spanish version of 21.  This version of 21 is played without any 10s, 9s or 8s in the deck but all of the other characteristics of the game are the same as modern blackjack.  Cervantes wrote this story between 1601 and 1602 meaning that ventiuna was played at the turn of the 17th century or possibly even earlier.  This game soon spread all around Europe and eventually made its way to America.

When this game was brought to the United States, gambling establishments offered bonus payouts to increase the game’s interest.  One of these bonuses would offer players an extra payout if they had a hand made up of a black Jack and Aces of spades.  This hand was known as a blackjack and the name of this hand soon became the name of this ever-popular game.  In modern blackjack, players have a blackjack if they have an Ace along with a face card or 10 regardless of the colour or suit of the cards.
