Sit n Go Low-Limit Thoughts

Lately, I have been playing single table Sit n Go tournaments. These tables typically have nine to ten players and the levels are from five to ten minutes depending on whether you are playing a Turbo Sit n Go or not. I happened to be playing the standard ten minute levels.

Many people seem surprised when I tell them that they should play tight early in these tournaments and simply watch as player after player knocks themselves out with mediocre hands. It just is not profitable to play several hands in such a fast format when you can increase your percentages significantly by allowing other players to do the dirty work.

Trust me. You will pick up enough hands to at least make it down to the final five or six players and then you can pick up the aggression accordingly. In the mean time playing solid aggressive poker is the best way to put yourself in position to win the tournament once you get short handed.

Why?

You have to take into consideration a few key factors that will affect the way you can be successful in this kind of format.

  • Players are not going to fold under any circumstances
  • You will be called with pocket pairs all the way down to [2][2]
  • You will be called or re-raised with flush draws on the board

When you take these things into consideration it makes for an extremely volatile table. That is why tightening up makes the most sense early. Sure, you are going to have to win a race or two to get down to the final three players where the money is but at least you are still in the tournament.

Be smart and you will reap the benefits in the long run.
