Craps Dice Control – Myth or Reality?

Craps Dice Control – Myth or Reality?

Almost every casino gambler realizes that you could work a 9 to 5 job for 40 years, slowly move up the company ladder, invest in a mutual fund, and retire a semi-wealthy person. However, every gambler also realizes that this is boring, and spending your life in pursuit of an edge over the house is a much more exciting path.

One of the ways in which gamblers attempt to gain this edge is through craps dice control. Dice control reportedly requires lots of skill and years of practice to perfect. But there are plenty of people who don’t think casino craps dice control is worth the practice since they consider it a myth. So what’s the case with dice control….is it a myth or a reality? Let’s find the answer right now!

The Concept of Dice Control

When the average craps player holds dice in their hands, they have no idea what number will turn up after the dice are rolled. This is where dice control practitioners differ since they seek to roll a desired casino number (or avoid a certain number) through skill and technique. Obviously craps dice control experts don’t expect to throw a certain number every time, but their goal is to get a desired result at least a percentage of the time.  Normally, the goal is to produce as many throws without seven turning up as possible.

In order to manipulate dice throws in their favor, dice controllers spend hours honing their skill. By holding the dice the same way and using the same casino craps throwing mannerism every time, these people believe it’s possible to produce controlled throws.

How Dice Control Works

Now that the concept of casino dice control has been explained, it’s time to take a look at how this theory is put into practice. And one aspect of making controlled throws is gripping the dice the same way every time. Seeing as how many dice control experts want to avoid throwing a seven, they hold the dice in a V-shape (both 3’s showing) because no seven combinations are exposed.

How you hold the dice is only the beginning though since thousands of throws must be practiced in order to perfect the rolling motion. The key is that the dice need to be rolled hard enough to hit the back end of the table, yet not so hard that control is lost. The more times a player can roll without turning up sevens, the better dice control they have.

What Constitutes Dice Control Success?

Six out of a possible 36 combinations will produce a 7 in craps; simply put, you have 5 to 1 odds of throwing a 7 in craps. Since the goal of dice control is to avoid sevens, players look to beat the 5 to 1 odds of rolling a seven. After all, the house counts on players to roll the average number of 7’s to keep their house edge.

But if you were to throw the dice 37 times and roll a seven just 6 times, you would beat the average, and thus negate the house edge on 6 and 8 place bets (very popular among dice control players). Seeing as how one out of every 37 rolls is the difference between a winner and a loser, you don’t need to control the dice perfectly in order to beat the house….just every once and a while.

Dice Control Masters

While many people are highly skeptical of dice control, there are a few famous examples of players who’ve beaten the casinos in craps repeatedly. Dominic “The Dominator” LoRiggio is one of the players who made a very nice living by beating the house edge in craps. Also called “The Man with the Golden Arm,” LoRiggio routinely won thousands of dollars each night at the craps tables. He has also demonstrated his skills in front of audiences as LoRiggio currently holds the world record for most rolls without a seven turning up at 56.

Another dice control expert who has taken the casino for lots of money is LoRiggio’s partner Frank Scoblete. Before meeting LoRiggio, Scoblete was been a lifelong gambler who had worked to perfect his dice control skills over the years. Scoblete was already successful at craps in his own right, but after meeting up with LoRiggio, the two-man team won tens of thousands every night at various casinos.

Myth or Legitimate Skill?

On the heels of LoRiggio and Scoblete’s casino success, dozens of other dice control “experts” and coaches have sprung up. Some of them claim they can turn anybody into a casino craps winner while others simply offer advice while making no guarantees. In any case, pretty much everybody says that dice control takes months or even years of practice before one becomes great.

For some people not even coaches, practice, or any amount of advice leads them to beating the house. This being said, many people are still skeptical as to whether or not dice control works and think that coaches and experts are charlatans. On the other hand, is it really so hard to believe that somebody could avoid rolling 7’s once and a while by using the same throwing motion over and over again?
