What You need to know about Craps Tournaments

There’s no doubt that craps has become one of the most popular casino games in the gambling world today. This game gives people a chance to root for each other since many players around the table will be hoping for the same dice roll. And, due to the immense popularity of the game, most casinos now hold tournaments in order to give people a different way to play craps.

Because people love craps so much, some players will jump into a tournament blindly thinking they know what will take place. But you could be in for a huge disappointment if you don’t know everything in advance about a craps tourney. Here are some things you should check out before booking any hotels or paying any entry fees.

Tournament Fees

It goes without saying that most casinos are going to be charging some sort of fee for craps tournaments they hold. Some casinos may not charge an entry fee for a craps tourney, but any free tournament is not going to have worthwhile prizes. Tournaments that do require an entry fee will usually provide players with a set amount of chips and the person with the most chips at the end will be the winner. If the tourney doesn’t have an entry fee then you need to be especially wary since the casino will make people play with their own money if this is the case. In some instances, casinos will require people to bet on every throw and this can get very expensive.

Prizes

When you’re evaluating the prizes in a craps tournament you need to be sure that the reward is worth the fees. Most casinos stage craps tourneys in an effort to get people to walk through their door so they spend money on other games too. Since this is the case, a casino should be giving most of the tournament entry fees back to the players in the form of cash prizes so you need to determine whether the rewards match the buy-in. And, as stated before, if the tournament is free then you need to make sure there is at least a worthy prize available unless you just want to play for fun.

Amount of Players

Oftentimes, a casino will set a minimum and maximum amount of players that can participate in a craps tournament. The minimum number ensures there is a large enough prize pool to pay out the prizes and the maximum number makes sure the amount of players doesn’t dwarf the prize money. You should always have a good idea of how many people are going to be in the tournament since the tourney might not even be held if there isn’t enough while your entry fee value will go down considerably if too many are entered.

The Rules

A  casino craps tournament can be set up in any number of ways so it definitely pays to know what the rules are prior to the game. Some tournaments are formatted to be similar to a regular game while special ones like marathon tournaments last several days and usually require a person to use their own cash while playing. The casino tourneys in which you use your own money will even have rules requiring you to make minimum casino bet amounts and place a pass line or don’t pass line wager every single casino roll. If you don’t know all of these rules going into the tournament, then you could be setting yourself up for an unfortunate surprise.

The Length

When you’re gathering information about a casino tournament, you’ll definitely need to know how long the casino tourney will last. As mentioned before, there are marathon tournaments which will last over the course of several days and there are shorter tourneys which will only run a few hours. You absolutely must know the length if you are from out of town in order to properly make hotel arrangements. Another reason knowing the length of the tournament is so important is because some tourneys have qualifying rounds before the actual event takes place. If you sign up for a craps tournaments and don’t make the qualifying rounds then your day is finished before it even got started.
