Online Gaming Coming to the USA
Following the seizure and shutdown of Full Tilt Poker recently, online casino gaming aficionados would be forgiven for assuming that this subject is dead and buried in the USA. The good news is that online gaming is not quite moribund. Lawmakers across the USA are scrambling to put measures in place to breathe new life into this undertaking. For years, the likes of former representative Barney Frank (D. Mass) and key lobbyists were working hard to promote online poker gaming as a legal and regulated option for players in the USA. That Alabama Congressman Spencer Bachus and others rejected pleas for poker gaming equality seemed to have won out. That is until recently…What’s going on the USA Regarding Online Gaming?
District of Columbia officials are contemplating using a sorry-looking building for the purpose of online casino gambling. This news comes amidst a national move to purge the USA of unlawful and unregulated online gaming enterprises. With the mood in Washington somewhat chilled against online gaming operators, a venture like this could have far reaching repercussions. There is expected to be real cash betting on games like Bingo, Blackjack and the inimitable Texas Hold’em. More good news is that this is purportedly going to take place in September 2011.
As the crow flies, the moves that are afoot here do require some legal clarification. Firstly – are these plans to gamble online legal? Ignorance will certainly not be rewarded on the part of the D.C. Council’s committee members, but hopes are high that this casino-style project can move forward. This issue of online gambling was initiated in January/February 2011 and was passed into law with little public testing. That the Finance Committee Chairman wasn’t aware that this was even an option is surprising.
Going Against the Public Interest?
The federal restrictions in place currently dictate that online gambling is an illegal activity, owing to the terms of the UIGEA. Recently the FBI and the US DoJ cracked down on Absolute Poker, PokerStars and now Full Tilt Poker. The move to promote an online casino is being met with cautious optimism. The city’s policies make it a little difficult to make sense of the types of gambling sites being established. It is expected that the D.C. Lottery and Charitable Games Control Board (CGCB) would receive 50% of the gaming revenue estimated at $13 million in 3 years.
Members of the Council are eager to get this project up and running. Michael A. Brown an Independent is fully intending to expedite the online casino project in the heart of Washington D.C. It is hoped that regulated online gaming be the order of the day, so that exploitation by illegal operators doesn’t take place. Players and punters will be limited in how much they can bet online. A weekly tally of $250 is permissible and the gaming site will be shut down between 4 am and 10 am. The goal is to generate long-term revenue for the city, not for players to be made or broken in one betting spell. It’s all for the upliftment of the communities in the area.
Online Gaming Remains a Thriving Industry Outside the USA
From as far afield as Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Singapore and the Philippines, online gaming is paving the way for massive payouts and plenty of entertainment. Top class online gaming sites adorn the playing field in a way that could never have been anticipated. While the USA is locked in debate about the legality of online poker gaming, players are patiently waiting in the wings for the day that gaming will be allowed outside the epicenters of reservations, Las Vegas and Atlantic City.
Some rules are already being set up that would see punters being at least 19 or older and actually residents of the city. The government-owned DC-Net will form the backbone of the tracking and electronic gaming system. It essentially connects government offices via fiber optics as well as the building intended for use by the online casino operator. Should this project grow wings, it will be another fantastic addition to the online gaming juggernaut that grips the world. Poker, backgammon, video slots, bingo, blackjack and Caribbean Stud games will reclaim their place in online America.
