Introduction

The city of Las Vegas is an icon. Besides being the largest city founded in the 20th century, it is the most popular vacation destination in the United States and the center of American gambling. More than 35 million visitors flock to this oasis in the desert every year and stay in some of the world’s most incredible casino hotels while experiencing the entertainment that only Las Vegas has to offer.
There’s a reason why Las Vegas is known as the Entertainment Capital of the World. From gambling to shows, nightclubs, spas, restaurants, shopping and more, there really is something for everyone in Sin City.

The History of Sin City

Las Vegas is one of the more relatively new cities in the United States, being founded in 1905. Nevada was the first of the western states to legalize gambling in the early 1900’s but it was quickly outlawed in 1910 due to federal anti-gambling laws. Illegal gambling flourished and Las Vegas developed its reputation during these early years.

In 1931, the state once again legalized gambling and the city began to flourish. The 1940’s saw the beginning of the world-renowned Las Vegas Strip and the next few decades saw exponential growth and visitors.

During the 1970’s, Las Vegas received its first real competition with the legalization of gambling and the formation of Atlantic City, New Jersey. This competition led to the next dawn and the character of modern Las Vegas – the Mega Resort and the Strip, with a smaller crowd visiting the older, more traditional Downtown area.

In recent years, the Downtown area has seen revival attempts by targeting a more upscale clientele and the construction of an exclusive shopping mall and the Freemont Street Experience. The Strip has also seen an influx of chic, select hotels like the Wynn and Paris Las Vegas opening in the last few years.

Las Vegas Presents: Shows Galore

From shows designed completely for Las Vegas to Broadway and Cirque du Soleil’s smash hits, there are shows for all tastes in the city that hails itself as ‘The Entertainment Capital of the World.’ Visitors can watch world-class acts like Cirque du Soleil’s “O” and “Mystere”, The Blue Man Group, and Broadway’s smash hit Mamma Mia!.
Some of the best shows in Las Vegas are completely free, the Freemont Street Experience entertains Downtown visitors with nightly light shows and the Caesar’s Palace Forum Shops offers a dazzling special effects show as mythical characters rise from the depths of the mall’s fountain to amaze shoppers. Many of the Las Vegas Casino – Hotel’s have their own free show for guests to enjoy.

Guests can find simple fair in practically every Las Vegas casino, with hotel diners and buffets dishing up treats for every meal. Specialty and themed restaurants, like Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville and the Harley Davidson Café, are always a great treat.

Set the town on Fire: Las Vegas Nightlife

The city is bursting with a lively, action-packed nightclubbing scene. Light up the night at the dozens of clubs, bars, and lounges. Almost all of the Las Vegas Casino mega-resorts come complete with bars and night lounges, while many also include clubs, as well.
Party-seekers will find a vivacious nightlife atmosphere in Sin City any day of the week and with no closing-time regulations, events last into the early morning hours at many spots. Choose from throwback nightclubs like MGM’s Studio 54 or ultramodern spots like The Palm’s Rain and Ghostbar.

For the nature lovers and those seeking a rest from the hotels and casinos, Las Vegas has a diverse amount of outdoors activities within driving distance including golf courses, the Hoover Dam, Red Rock, and the Valley of Fire. Sightseers can even take a helicopter ride to the Grand Canyon straight from the Strip.
During most of the year, excluding the scorching summers, Vegas visitors can enjoy a fascinating stroll down the strip, where almost all of the city’s mega-resorts are within walking distance of each other. Guests seeking a more leisurely tour of the city can journey around the town on the new Monorail that stretches across the strip and beyond.
