I’ve been an avid online casino gaming ‘pro’ for quite some time. The funny thing is that in all the time I’ve been prepping myself for American and European Roulette and winning big pots, I never expected real-life gaming to be any different. Well, it certainly is and there’s a funny side to this tale. There is no fiction stranger than life. My, my how those words ring true. I’m a gambler – plain and simple – I take what I like to consider calculated risks in all my gaming exploits. My game of choice (because it’s just so much easier than most others
) is roulette. Like other gamblers, I’ve learned that European Roulette offers punters the best odds, owing to the exclusion of the 00. Basically this means that the house edge is significantly lower and that’s great news for players. Instead of having 38 numbers to bet on – as in American Roulette, European Roulette sports only 37 numbers and that extra digit puts players in contention for better odds and more regular winnings. In American Roulette the house edge is 5.26% and in European Roulette the house edge is 2.70% - what a difference 1 digit makes! The truth is that it’s the payouts too that make this difference. Payouts are 35 to 1 on digits in both games – so that’s the clincher. Online gaming is far easier than real-life gaming – if only I knew
lol.
Real life casino roulette is a rip-snorting experience par excellence
So I’m ready to take a trip to Africa’s Kingdom of Gaming Pleasure – the Palace of the Lost City in South Africa. This is a mega-casino kingdom and certainly on par with the very best in the world. I get to the sprawling roulette tables and I’m suddenly intimidated by the presence of so many people playing the game. At home I’m like feet up on my desk in my PJ's gaming away and making a mint. Here I’ve got strangers looking at me and wondering what my bets are going to look like. I figure, we’re all gamers – let me give this a shot. I drop R500 on the table. I look at the guy next to me and he winks. ’22 Black is hot,’ he says. ‘It’s landed there twice already – in a row.’ I can scarcely believe it but I look up at the electronic board and wonder of wonders – it’s true! What are the odds of hitting the trifecta I wonder?
Why not – I drop some loot on 22 black and the rest of my bankroll on the color black. That should pay out decently if it hits – but I’m certainly not counting on a winner here. A bit of fun and nothing else, I figure. ‘No more bets please!’ calls the dealer. And then a roar of applause erupts as the dude next to me launches into me in some kind of full-contact rugby tackle. He rubs his meaty knuckles against my head in what I imagine to be a show of camaraderie and excitement. I’ve suddenly won thousands of rands (hundreds of dollars) and I’m being congratulated by all the players at the table. What an unbelievable rush! I barely had time to recover from being winded before the croupier congratulates me and the massive rugby prop on top of me calls for a round of drinks for the whole table!
