Casino enthusiasts will no doubt be keeping a close eye on the first big event of the poker calendar, the 2013 European Poker Tour, which got underway at the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas on Monday (January 7th).

At the time of writing, poker professional Ashton Griffin had the lead with 253,700 chips, although he was closely followed by Maxim Lobzhanidze with 248,900.

Notable players also include celebrated Olympian Michael Phelps as one of those hoping to grab a slice of the top prize pool.

Demand to participate in the tournament has been strong, with 987 players registering for a chance to win the top jackpot of $1,859,000 (£1,159,676.58).
