Washington, US, passes bill to decriminalise online poker
Washington is considering a bill to decriminalise online poker.
The bill to decriminalise the act of playing poker online was passed earlier this week and should soon become law.
At the moment, online gaming is a felony in Washington state, but the new bill will see it downgraded to a civil infraction with a maximum fine of $50.
The existing laws mean online poker players could face a charge of $10,000 and five year prison term.
Representative Paul Harris’ bill, downgrading online poker, will only apply to those playing “solely for [their] own enjoyment and not as part of an enterprise that derives income from operating an Internet website that transmits or receives gambling information”.
