Basics of Poker: the Bets

Poker is not like poker: there are the most popular poker variants Texas Hold’em and Omaha and there are also numerous other variants with more or less big differences. Besides, the same variant can be played with various limits: no limit, pot limit, fixed limit and spread limit. The limits determine the availability of the bet sizes for the poker players. Here, we explain in short the differences between the respective limits.

No Limit

There is no restriction of the wager when playing no limit poker – the true poker game of the poker pros. That means, every player is allowed to put any amount of money into the pot that he/she wants to put into the pot. There is no maximum number of raises per round. Therefore, this variant allows the highest winnings – but also the most serious losses!

Pot Limit

When playing a poker game with pot limit, there is a fixed small blind and a fixed big blind. Every betting round you are only allowed one raise of the amount already in the pot. However, the number of raises in each round is not limited.

Fixed Limit

At fixed limit poker a certain amount of money is determined for each wager/raise. At a $10 limit game you are only allowed to raise $10. Besides, the number of raises is limited to 3. Then, there is the so-called cap.

Spread Limit

Spread limit poker also has some specifications regarding the wager, but they are more flexible than they are at fixed limit poker. Within a specified framework, a player can choose his desired bet. For the first rounds there often are lower framework conditions (e.g. bets are allowed from $1 to $5) and in the later rounds there are higher framework conditions (e.g. $5 to $10).
