A

Action
– Putting money into the pot.

Active Player – In poker this refers to a player who is still involved in the game.

Add-on – Being able to buy more chips during a game.

All in - Is when a poker player wagers all his remaining chips.

Ante - This is a forced bet in which all players must deposit an equal amount of money before the dealing begins.

B

Backdoor - when a player catches the turn and river card to make a drawing hand.

Banker – This is the dealer, or the players, who checks the action of the other players.

Bankroll - This is the total amount of money that a player or a casino has available to back their bets.

Bet – A money wager on a chance outcome.

Betting Limit – This is the minimum and maximum bet that a player is allowed to place in a single bet.

Blind Bet – This is a bet placed before the player sees the cards.

Blinds - Obligatory bets in Texas Hold'em Poker.

Bluff - When a player raises a weak or worthless hand, in an attempt to drive other players out of the game.

Board – All the community cards which are dealt face-up in the centre of the table are known as the board.
Boat – This is a full house.
Break-Even Point – The bets placed and the payoffs balance each other out.
Bring-In - In Seven-Card Stud, the bring-in is a required bet made by a player with the lowest up-card in the 1st round of betting.
Buck – This is a $100 wager
Burn Card - The Burn Card is dealt to players before the Turn card and the River card.
Button – This is a disc marker which is moved from player to player after each hand to show the dealer position.

Buy in - Lists the cash amount required to buy chips before entering a game of poker.

C

Card Counting –
A mental record of all the cards dealt since the shuffle.
Card Shark - An expert and wily card player.

Call - Matching the bet that currently on the table.

Casino Advantage - The percentage advantage that a casino has over its players.

Check – By saying ‘check’ a player will be able to stay in a poker game without betting.

ChipsGambling currency purchased for real money at casinos tables.

Chip Tray – This is the tray used by the dealer to maintain the table’s stock of chips. 

Cold – A cold player is one who is having a losing streak.

Comps - Complimentary gifts given by the casino to lure players in to gamble.

Copy – A Pai-Gow Poker term when a player and the dealer have the same two-card or five-card hand. In this case the dealer wins.

Cracking The Nut – Massive gambling wins that cover all expenses and generate a big profit.

Cut – The dealer splits a deck in half and inverts them after they have been shuffled.

D

Deal - Handing out the cards during a hand.
Designated Dealer – The player/s entrusted with dealing cards in a poker game.
Deuce - A 2-spot card.
Deuce-to-seven - A card method of evaluating low hands.

Dime Bet - This is a large ($1000) wager.

Discard Tray - A tray to the right of the dealer which holds the cards which have been used.
Doubling-Up – A player doubles up a bet, after a loss, to try an recover costs and score a profit.
Draw - In draw poker, the second round of cards that are dealt.
Draw Button – Found in Video Poker machines, allowing players to draw up to 5 new cards.
Drop Box – A repository in casinos for storing cash, chips and markers.

Face Cards - The Jack, Queen and King in a deck of cards (The Royals)

Family Pot – All players at the table enter the pot.

Fifth Street - In Seven-Card Stud this is the betting round following the delivery of the 5th card.
Fill – To draw a card that completes a five-card hand, or a straight or a flush or a full house or a straight flush.
Fishing – A poker player hoping for the card that will turn his fortunes around.
Flat Betting – A consistent betting schedule with no increasing wagers placed.

FlushThis is a hand consisting of 5 cards of the same suit.

Flop - In Texas Hold’em, these are the 3 cards dealt face-up on the board.

Flush - A hand consisting of 5 cards of the same suit.
Fold – A player who drops out of a hand and forfeits the pot.
Four of a Kind - 4 Cards of the same rank.
Fourth Street – Also known as the Turn.

Full HouseThis is a hand consisting of three of a kind and a pair.

Gambling –
Wagering sure money against an uncertain outcome.
Gross Winnings – Total winnings including the initial bet.

Hand –
The cards a player is holding.

High Roller - A player who bets big and either wins big, or loses big.

Hot - A poker player on a winning streak.

Inside Straight - A hand with 4 of the 5 cards needed for a straight.

Jackpot

Jacks Or Better - In video poker games if you get a pair of Jacks or higher you win.

Kicker –
This is the highest card that is unrelated to the type of poker hand a player is holding and is used for breaking ties.

Limit –
All these types of poker games have fixed limits on betting activity.
Low Roller – A player who only wagers in small amounts

- The pot is awarded to the hand with the lowest poker value.

Pot – The money which accumulates during a poker game

Quads - Four of a kind.


R


Raise – Matching the previous bet and increasing the wager to raise the stakes.


Rake - The casino’s charge for each hand of poker. 


River – This is the last card dealt in a hand of Stud or Texas Hold'Em. 


Royal Flush – This is the best hand and is made up of an ace-high straight flush.


S


Seventh Street
- In Seven-Card Stud, the 5th round of betting is called Seventh Street and players have 7 cards.


Showdown - When 2 or more players play through the last card dealt to determine the winning hand, they show their hands to determine the winner.


Shuffle – Mixing the cards before they are dealt


Sixth Street - In Seven-Card Stud, in the 4th round players have 6 cards.


Steal – Winning the pot by bluffing.


Straight – A poker hand made up of 5 cards of consecutive ranks. 


Straight Flush – A poker hand consisting of 5 cards of consecutive ranks of the same suit.

Table Stakes – The betting/raising stakes are limited to the amount of money a player has on the table. 


Third Street - In Seven-Card Stud, the 1st round of betting is called Third Street where players have 3 cards.


Three Of A Kind – A poker hand made up of three cards of the same rank.


Tilt - To play recklessly. 


Two Pair Two pairs of the same card value.
