Learning How to Fix Your Poker Mistakes

Whether you’re a seasoned veteran or a beginner casino gamer, you’re going to make mistakes in the game of poker. And poker is all about mistakes since those who make them often end up losing tons of money while those who can avoid making mistakes wind up rich. 

 

Obviously, you want to be in the second mentioned group since these are the people who every casino poker player strives to become. Of course you can’t avoid making these types of casino mistakes until you’ve identified them and have learned to correct your poker mistakes. With that in mind, here is a look at how to solve your poker miscues.

Before you can go about identifying your poker gaming mistakes, you must first realize what a mistake is. There’s no easy way to explain this because poker is a pretty elaborate game, but a good general definition of a poker miscue is when you do anything other than the best possible play. For instance, if you’re holding KdQd and your opponent is holding 8s8h on a board of Ah9d3c then you’re supposed to check-fold going by the book.

 

However, there’s also a good chance that your opponent will fold to a raise since they already know they’re beat by two over pairs. In this situation, the correct play would be a raise since you’re going to win more times than not. Of course not every poker play is as simple as this, so the only true measure of identifying a mistake is realizing when you could have won more casino money in a certain situation or lost less in another. 

Most casino players can figure out when they’ve made a mistake in poker by looking at the end result. However, it’s difficult to move towards fixing that mistake if you don’t have a vague idea of what your opponent was holding or what they were thinking. But forget about trying to know exactly what casino cards they had since this is almost impossible to do. 

 

Instead, you should factor in a variety of things such as pot odds, the opponent’s table image, your own table image, and the opponent’s betting patterns. Unfortunately, you’re probably not going to be able to keep track of all this stuff in your head so it’s useful to jot this information down on a piece of paper after you’ve made a big mistake. The more information you keep track of from a failed hand, the better you’re going to be able to rectify the situation when your playing session is over with.  

Once you can identify a casino mistake and have the information from that miscue, your work is only half done because you have to figure out why it is a mistake as well. Just simply jotting down a boatload of information isn’t going to be very helpful to you if you’re not applying it to anything. After you’ve identified a mistake, go in and figure out what the better play would have been. When you’ve figured out the better play then you can determine what the correct casino move will be in future situations. 

 

But remember that when you’re doing this, avoid working on parts of your game that are already sound. Too often players will try to meticulously refine good online casino game plays they made until they’re perfect when they should instead be putting time into the really bad plays they made. The key is to become good in all facets of poker; not excellent in some and poor in others.
