Chris Ferguson

Chris Ferguson

Chris “Jesus” Ferguson was born in Los Angeles on the 11th April 1963. His full name is Christopher Philip Ferguson. He now lives in the Pacific Palisades in California.

He studied at the UCLA, where he earned a Ph.D. in computer science, specializing in virtual network algorithms. He has a good understanding of game theory, as his father, Thomas Ferguson has a background in mathematics and teaches game theory at UCLA.

Ferguson first started playing poker when he was very young. His first money games were during his college years, where he played games in IRC chat rooms.   He entered the World Series of Poker in 2000, and beat T. J. Cloutier to take the $1.5 million prize in the main event.

Chris Ferguson has a very calculating, mathematical approach to poker. He has on a number of occasions painstakingly built up winnings from a very small amount, just for the challenge of doing so. Most recently, he turned $0 into $10,000 for Full Tilt Poker – starting off in Freeroll tournaments then entering paid tables with the winnings. It took several months to do so, and the final winnings were donated to a children's charity.

In 2005, Ferguson played in the inaugural British Poker Open – a televised tournament in London which was the biggest televised poker event in the history of the UK. He also took part in the European Poker Masters in 2006.

Chris Ferguson has racked up live tournament winnings of $5,900,000 as of 2007, including 7 money finishes in the World Poker Tour tournaments and five World Series of Poker titles - the 2000 Seven Card Stud, 2000 Main Event, 2001 Omaha High-Low, 2003 Mixed, and the 2003 Omaha High-Low.

Chris has the nickname 'Jesus' because of his long brown hair and beard. He tends to adopt a signature motionless pose while playing poker, to make it more difficult for him to be read. He has also consciously developed a look – a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, which he wears at the table in an attempt to shake off his reputation as an academic. Many people consider him to be one of the nicest people in the poker industry.

Today, Chris is less active in the poker scene – he usually only attends the bigger buy-in events, and spends the rest of his time focusing on his other interests, such as swing dancing and day trading.
