David A. Ulliot is an English professional poker player. He was born in Hull on the 4th January, 1954, and was once a minor figure in the Hull 'underworld'. At the poker table he often wears orange tinted sunglasses, and knuckleduster rings that read 'Devil' and 'Fish' – he reportedly made the rings himself. He has been married twice, and is currently undergoing a divorce from his second wife. He has seven children.
Ulliot's father was a World War II paratrooper who became a truck driver after the war. Ulliot grew up in a council house in a working class area. He left school at the age of 15 without any qualifications, and took his first job making trophies for G K Beaulah.
His first introduction to gambling was visiting the bookies with his father – he won his first bet at 50:1. He would spend his lunch times picking winners at horse racing, and eventually lost his job when he took an afternoon off to go to the races. It was after this that he became involved in organised crime in the Hull area, starting with a safe cracking operation. He was arrested several times, and served some time in prison. He gave up the life of crime after meeting his second wife.
Ulliot started playing poker as a young child, but did not start playing seriously until the late 1990s. He spent most of his adult life doing other forms of gambling – getting banned from the William Hill chain of betting shops after he managed to gamble £4,000 up to £70,000.
He won his first major poker tournament in 1993, and after that he decided to work on improving his game, and in 1997 decided to head to Las Vegas for the first time, where he entered the Four Queens Poker Classic. In the heads-up stage of the tournament, some followers of his opponent Men Nguyen cheered him on by calling out 'Go On The Master'. Ulliots friend, Gary Whitaker, cheered Ulliot on by calling out 'Go on the Devilfish' – a nickname given to him by Stephen Au-Yeung, a friend, and poker game runner from Birmingham in the UK. Since that game, the nickname stuck. He runs a poker web site under the name DevilFishPoker.com.
Ulliot has won one World Series of Poker bracelet, and managed 24 money finishes in the tournament. He has also won one World poker Tour title, and racked up 7 money finishes in the WPT.
He was one of 40 players to appear in the first series of the TV show 'Late Night Poker' – he played well throughout the show, and went on to win the £40,000 first prize. His performance was a major factor in the renewal of the show, which went on to run for a total of six seasons, with Ulliott appearing in each of them.
Uliott is a strong Texas Hold'em and Omaha player. He is also considered quite good at five-card stud. His total tournament winnings so far are more than $4,800,000.
