The World Poker Tour - Competition for the WSOP?

The World Poker Tour – WPT – is one of the most important poker tournaments of the world. However, this is not exactly true: the WPT is no single tournament, but it is a series of tournaments, taking place at various places. Most of these tournaments are organized in North America. The last of these tournaments regularly take place Las Vegas in April and it became the second largest poker tournament of the world – this is why the WPT is a big competition for the World Series of Poker (WSOP).

Poker Tournaments on TV

The World Poker Tour was founded in 2002 and it was broadcasted right from the beginning. This was and still is an essential aspect of the concept of this series of tournaments: the media attention of the WPT guarantees that the expenses of the organizers and investors of this series of tournaments are covered, but it also has contributed to the important fact that poker is booming in recent years. The viewing figures of the WPT are rising every year – particularly in the USA – and the number of participants is rising, too.

Texas Hold’em for Pros and Amateurs

At the World Poker Tour you can only play Texas Hold’em. There is another special thing about the World Poker Tour: There are only six participants at the final table of each tournament – whereas eight is the usual number of participants of at a final table. The series of tournaments is especially popular with amateur players. Each and everyone can participate who can afford the buy-in. That is why every now and then an occasional player meets one of the best poker pros of the world – and sometimes the results are surprising both players and the audience alike. In the meantime, the WPT has become a must for all poker pros. The winners are famous players like Howard Lederer and Daniel Negreanu. Most of the tournaments take place in the USA, e.g. in Las Vegas and Los Angeles, but the schedule also includes European cities like London or Paris. The organizers of the World Poker Tour always strive for something new and exciting to present to the poker audience. And with regard to this point they succeed each and every time: there are tournaments for the ladies and there is a “Walk of Fame” for the most successful poker players. Each year, the WPT presents something very special. However, there is one thing that was adapted from the big sister called the WSOP: since the year 2008 the winning poker players receive a bracelet, too!
