Common Roulette Superstitions
Roulette is purely a game of chance and there are no real betting strategies that will increase the odds of winning. It is a simple and easy to play game – the dealer spins the roulette wheel, drops the ball and the number that the ball lands on is the winner. The previous spin has no bearing on the next spin – each is independent of one another. However, there are many players who believe this game is shrouded in superstition and mystery. These players think they can change their luck by performing certain actions, betting on certain numbers or wearing certain clothes. Some superstitions and myths are actually plausible while other superstitions are pretty bizarre. There are always players who wear strange clothes or say odd things to try to improve their luck. Roulette superstitions are part of the culture and are here to stay.
One of the most common superstitions is the belief in lucky numbers. Some people believe that certain numbers, like birthdays, anniversaries and phone numbers are their lucky numbers so they decide to place bets using these numbers. Other numbers that people like to bet on are referred to as ‘sleeping numbers’. These are numbers that have not won for awhile and people believe it is more likely for these numbers to come up. There is no real mathematical basis for this because for every spin, each number has an equal chance of being picked regardless of the previous spins.
Lucky Clothing or Actions
Some roulette players choose to wear certain clothing or trinkets to help boost their luck. They believe wearing certain colors or wearing a 4 leaf clover will help increase their luck. Some players also believe that carrying a rabbit’s foot will give them good luck. People even have their own unique lucky charms that they always carry with them when they play roulette. Players also believe that praying may help to increase their luck. Many times players will promise to be more observant of their religion if they can just get some luck while playing roulette. Players may also have signature hand gestures or phrases that they make or say in an attempt to increase their luck in the game.
Trends are also popular superstitions among roulette players. Some players believe that roulette trends are not coincidental, like 6 numbers in the 1st row or 6 consecutive blacks. However, because each spin on a roulette wheel is independent, the previous result cannot affect the future result so trends have no influence over which numbers will be picked. Of course, there are wheels that do have a bias. These wheels have a flaw in their design and certain numbers may appear more often than others. In this case, it is possible to increase the odds of winning because it is easier to pick winning numbers based on the bias of the wheel.
Lucky Colors and Betting Patterns
Another popular roulette superstition is betting on a lucky color. Players determine their lucky this by which color on the roulette wheel caught their eye first. Betting on red or black does give players a better chance of winning but if they see the green space first, it is very unlikely that they will win. Some people also believe that betting in a particular pattern will increase their chances of winning. Unfortunately, there is no betting pattern that will generate long-term success.
The Martingale Strategy
One popular roulette strategy is called the Martingale. This strategy says that players should double their bets on black or red after every loss in order to make up the profit that was lost. It is based on the assumption that a losing streak will not last long enough to completely deplete a player’s bankroll – an incorrect assumption. There is a lot of risk involved with this strategy and not a lot of reward so it is best if players avoid using this type of strategy and just enjoy the game.
· Many players consider betting on the number 13 to be unlucky.
· Black is an unlucky color to wear in a casino.
· Some players will also avoid the casino if they experience one of the classic superstitions, like a black cat crossing their path or if they break a mirror.
· It is considered bad luck to use the main entrance of the casino.
· It is thought to be unlucky if a dog stands by the table you are playing.
· It is bad luck to count money when playing in a game.
· It is bad luck to touch another player’s shoulder during the game.
· There are players who also refuse to accept their winnings in $50 bills because it is believed that the $50 bill is bad luck. Some players think that singing or whistling in a game will bring them back luck.
· It is unlucky for a player to cross his or her legs when gambling.
Ultimately, superstitions can increase the suspense that is felt during a roulette game, particularly when players truly believe in that superstition. For some players, it is impossible to talk them out of believing in superstition, despite how bizarre or irrational that superstition may be. On the other hand, there are many players who simply believe they won just because they got lucky with no underlying causes. Players who use rational thought to play roulette will have a much better chance of enjoying the game and increasing their odds of winning. These players will place even money bets and play roulette games that offer better odds rather than praying or wearing a rabbit’s foot. Although superstitions can be amusing, they are not based in fact and they will not increase the odds of winning a roulette game.
