A Look at the World of Sportsbooks

It’s always interesting to examine the different reasons why people root for one team or another in sports competitions. Most of the time, people are simply fans of a certain team because they grew up around the city the team plays in or – even worse – they like the mascot. But there’s one thing that can cause a person to heavily root for a team more passionately than even the most hardcore fans and that’s when a person has some money riding on a game. Due to people’s passion for betting on sports, a multi-billion dollar industry has arisen over the past few decades and it is these businesses that set up avenues for people to engage in gambling. Most people call these businesses sportsbooks and, as you’ll find, it’s a very interesting world.

The business side

It’s pretty obvious that sportsbooks don’t set up huge businesses and provide lines on games out of the goodness of their hearts. They’re trying to make money with their operations and this comes from what is called the juice or vigorish. Basically, the juice is the money that a bookmaker takes off the top of a bet to ensure that they are always getting paid. A good example of this is when a person bets $220 to win $200. $20 of the bet will be taken off the top of the wager so that the sportsbook gets paid too. However, this doesn’t ensure that the bookmakers will make a profit so the lines they provide can move one way or the other throughout the week to try and equal the betting action on both sides. This way, money doesn’t come out of the sportbooks’ pockets.

Land-based sportsbooks

The history of sportsbetting definitely lends credence to land-based sportsbooks because the Internet wasn’t around when the bookmaking concept was thought up. And this had led to the creation of many brick and mortar sportsbooks in areas where gambling is considered legal. Two of the biggest regions where a person can find land-based sportsbooks are Las Vegas, in the United States, and Macau, which is a special administrative region of China. Las Vegas has been a major gambling hub for over half a century and, in being so, offers giant sportsbooks in its casinos. Macau, which is often called the Las Vegas of the Far East, is also a sportsbettors’ dream due to its vast collection of bookmakers.

Online sportsbooks

Even though online sportsbooks haven’t been around as long as land-based ones, they are becoming increasingly popular with each passing year. This is because of the convenience that online bookmakers offer bettors since people don’t have to travel anywhere to place their bets using this method. The convenience factor that online sportsbooks deliver to people has helped make the Internet world of sportsbetting a multi-billion dollar industry just like land-based operations. However, there are some limits to the world of online bookmaking in that quite a few countries deem the activity of betting on sports to be illegal. Despite this fact, there are still over 80 different countries that have no problem with sportsbetting and allow it to go unchecked online.

Underground Sportsbetting

The concept of sportsbetting is not something that originated with the advent of sportsbooks. In fact, sportsbetting has been going on for centuries as ancient civilizations would bet various items on the outcome of athletic competitions such as running. And there was definitely no organized form of gambling back in these days like there is in modern times. Even today people look for ways to get around the organized betting that is offered today and engage in underground wagering. Whether that means people betting with unlicensed (and sometimes dangerous) bookmakers or making huge wagers amongst themselves, the underground world of sportsbetting is also a huge force nowadays.
