Casino players at the Roulette table in the old days
Roulette rules are pretty standardized, regardless of the particular variant you are playing. But there are subtle rule variations between different roulette games and it’s important to understand them so that you can gain maximum advantage. Before we dive into the deep end, let’s quickly review some of the more common roulette rules. Recall that there are inside bets and outside bets in roulette games. As a general rule, inside bets have higher payouts but they don’t come good as often as outside bets.

Did you know?

The first form of roulette was devised in France back in the 18th century. The word roulette comes from the French language and means “little wheel”.

Roulette payoffs

Here are the payoffs for inside bets:

Inside Bets Payoffs
Straight Up (Bets on Individual Numbers) 35:1
Split Bets (Bets on Two Numbers) 17:1
Street Bets (Bets on Three Numbers) 11:1
Corner Bets (Bets on Four Numbers) 8:1
Top Line Bets (For American Roulette on 0,00, 1, 2, 3) 6:1
Six Line Bets or Double Street Bets (Bets on Two Streets) 5:1

Here are the payoffs for outside bets:

Outside Bets Payoffs
Red or Black Bets 1:1
Odd or Even Bets 1:1
High or Low Bets 1:1
Dozen Bets  (1st 12, 2nd 12, 3rd 12) 2:1
Column Bets (2 to 1 selections of 12 numbers) 2:1
Snake Bets (Bets on 1-5-9-12-14-16-19-23-27-30-32-34) 2:1

Special Roulette Bets

-The La Partage Rule in French Roulette states that if you have placed even money bets and you have wagered on 0, you will only forfeit half of your bet if 0 comes up.

-Double Street Bet or Sixainne is a wager on 2 streets with a payoff of 5:1.

-Top Line Bets are only available in American Roulette and they are wagers placed on 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. The payoff for top line bets is 6:1.

-Roulette Neighbours are lesser-known bets in roulette that are actually quite popular with aficionados of the game. Neighbours are numbers that are grouped together on the roulette wheel. They include Voisins du Zero (numbers 22 – 25 all inclusive), Orphelins (17-34-6 & 1-20-14-31-9), and Tiers du Cylindre (numbers 27 – 33 all inclusive).
